Model Nursery School celebrates golden jubilee

One of the premier Ghana Education Service (GES) nursery school, Model Nursery School at Ridge, has held its 31st Speech and Prize-giving Day and golden jubilee celebration.

The celebration was organised to graduate pupils in Kindergarten (KG) 2 and to honour deserving pupils and teachers who have contributed to the school’s success in its 50 years of existence.

Speeches

A former Second Lady of Ghana, Mrs Matilda Amissah-Arthur, who was the guest speaker, called on all parents to help their children discover themselves and not ward off that responsibility to teachers. “Trying to discover your child’s true self will make the child comfortable and attached to you,” she said.

She also advised the teachers to accept every child for who he or she was, saying: “No child is daft. Children develop at different paces. Your negative behaviour and negative reactions to what they do can carve them for life.”

She encouraged them to keep abreast of new methods of early childhood training and partner with other nursery schools, old students and parents to give the best to the children.

The Minister of Railway Development, Mr Joe Ghartey, who was the special guest, applauded the school for being a pacesetter in nursery education and not collapsing as others had done within the past 50 years.

Report

The Head of the school, Madam Helen Alema, said the school was established in February 1965 by the late Grace Boafo and the late Joyce Larbi, who were sponsored by the GES to undergo early childhood education training in Denmark. The school currently has a population of 278 pupils.

She, however, said the school lacked infrastructure, play materials, a library and an ICT laboratory, and therefore, called on all parents, the government, and all other stakeholders to come to the aid of the school so that it can give the best to the children.

The School Prefect, Miss Mercy Michelle Narh, a KG 2 pupil, thanked the teachers for tirelessly caring for the graduating class and also advised all pupils to be obedient, respectful and studious in the next academic year.

Donations

The municipal chief executive of the Korley Klottey Municipal Assembly Nii Adjei Tawiah, assured the school of the municipality’s support in all its endeavours, and donated GH¢1,000 to the school.

Mrs Amissah-Arthur also donated books, pencils, crayons and some play materials to support the library.

Mr Ghartey also promised to provide the school with three play swings for the children.
