Mandela Day observed with clean-up exercise at Nima

The United Nations Ghana Office, in partnership with ZOOMLION Ghana Limited, has undertaken a clean-up exercise at Nima and its surrounding areas as part of activities to mark this year’s Nelson Mandela International Day.

The 67-minute exercise saw personnel from the two institutions clean the streets of Nima, particularly the market, which had heaps of refuse.
Drains were also cleared.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic after the exercise, the National Information Officer of the UN information Centre, Mrs Cynthia Prah, said the clean-up exercise was part of the community service activities organised to mark the Nelson Mandela International Day.

“The UN and the Nelson Mandela Foundation seek the promotion of the day through community service. During the day, we spend 67 minutes to serve humanity and make the world a better place,” she said.

The clean-up exercise, she said, was also to instil in the community a sense of responsibility to maintain a clean environment and promote a healthy community.

She said the organisers chose the Nima community because of the level of waste generated within the area, adding that “this exercise will be a form of education for the entire people of Nima to learn the responsibility of maintaining a clean and safe environment”.

Mrs Prah commended the management of Zoomlion for providing the participants with the needed logistics and assistance to undertake the exercise.

Zoomlion committed

A Senior Communications Officer of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mr Daniel Ohene, stated that the company was ready to partner any organisation to ensure a clean and safe environment.

He said a strong partnership with public and private institutions would inculcate the sanitation spirit in the youth.

He called on the public to help address the challenges of sanitation by refraining from activities that would destroy the environment.
