Management team to supervise insurance task force inaugurated

A five-member management team to supervise the activities of the national task force for the implementation of the National Compulsory Insurance Policy was inaugurated in Accra yesterday.

The inauguration marks the beginning of the operations of the task force nationally.

There are currently two types of compulsory insurance in Ghana—motor insurance and private commercial buildings, including those under construction.

The taskforce was instituted by the National Insurance Commission (NIC), in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

The management team is made up of two representatives of the Ghana Police Service, a representative each of the NIC, and the Ghana Insurance Association.

The inaugural statement

The Deputy Commissioner of Insurance (NIC), Mr Simon Davor, who inaugurated the team, said the impact of most motor and fire accidents made it difficult to source and provide adequate compensation for victims of such calamities.

“It is, therefore, prudent for us to cover our liabilities to others by buying the appropriate insurance covers. Compulsory Insurance has, therefore, been designed to protect citizens from the negative effects of their own actions, the actions of others or from natural disasters,” he said.

Mr Davor said the development of the compulsory insurance would, among other benefits, ensure that commercial property owners and owners of commercial vehicles put in place adequate measures to protect users and third parties.

Compulsory insurance, he added, would also make room for complementary funding for the Motor Insurance Compensation Fund (MICF) and the Fire Fund.

According to him, the NIC, as a regulator of the industry, had carried out series of sensitisation activities, including stakeholder workshops and media publications, on the requirements of the policy prior to its implementation.

Message to task force

In his remarks, the Director General of Police Operations, COP Mr. John Kudalor, advised members of the taskforce to not use their position to settle personal scores or to do other things that they had not been mandated to.

He urged the management team to ensure that revenue generated from the activities of the task force did not leak out of the system.
