Man, 22, remanded for robbery attacks

A 22-year-old man alleged to have used unregistered motorbikes to undertake a number of robberies at Achimota and its surrounding areas in Accra has been arrested by the police.

The suspect, Solomon Klutse, was apprehended when he and his accomplices who are currently on the run made an attempt to rob a popular forex bureau at New Achimota last week

Klutse and his accomplices were said to have invaded the premises of the forex bureau with a locally made pistol and asked the operator of the bureau to surrender all the money he had made that day to them.

The operator was said to have made an attempt to alert outsiders but he was shot in his left hand.

The gunshot drew the attention of some residents of the area who quickly alerted the police.

Police intervention

Klutse and his accomplice were about to search and loot the forex bureau, but when they heard the police siren, they attempted to run away and Klutse was apprehended.

After preliminary investigations, Klutse was sent to court, where he was remanded into police custody.

Following Klutse’s arrest, the Mile 7 District Police Command conducted a swoop and managed to impound 40 more unregistered motorbikes yesterday.

Some of the riders abandoned their unregistered motorbikes and fled when they spotted the police patrol team heading towards their direction.

A number of people arrested for using those unregistered motorbikes failed to provide documents covering the motorbikes.

Klutse arrest

Briefing the Daily Graphic in Accra on Tuesday, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mrs Afia Tenge, said after Klutse’s arrest, a search on him led to the discovery of a used cartridge.

She said preliminary investigations conducted by the police revealed that Klutse and his accomplices were behind a number of robberies at New Achimota and its surrounding areas.

ASP Mrs Tenge said Klutse admitted that he and his accomplices were from Ashaiman and that they had used the unregistered motorbikes to rob many people.

Asked about the condition of the forex bureau operator who was shot, she said he was rushed to hospital where he was treated and discharged.

More operations

Mrs Tenge said the police would, in the coming weeks, intensify their operations in all the areas in Accra to clamp down on the activities of criminals, especially those who used unregistered motorbikes and vehicles to terrorise people.
