Legon launches policy to groom talents

The University of Ghana last Friday launched a policy to make it a hub of sporting talents in the country, by providing opportunities for athletes to pursue higher education, while deverloping the sporting potential.

The policy — University of Ghana Policy on Admission of Athletics Students (UG-PAAS) — seeks to nurture and groom sporting talents for national cause.

According to officials at the sports directorate of the university, the policy would make it easier for young talented athletes who meet the minimum admission requirements to study at the university and develop their sporting potential to the fullest.

The policy, in effect, will promote the growth and development of students’ performance in sports, thereby creating a sustainable relationship between sports and academic performance.

The Director General of the National Sports Authority, Joe Kpenge, who launched the initiative at the university’s annual Inter-Hall Sports Festival, called for a concerted effort to help achieve the objective of the policy.

The Head of the university’s sports directorate, Dr Bella Bello Bitugu, said the policy would serve as a hub for the production of excellent sportsmen and women to feed the various national teams.

He stated that those interested in the policy must meet the admission requirements which include being a member of a sports team at the zonal level and facing an interview panel, which will assess the athlete.
