‘Leaders need patience, compassion to succeed’

A senior lecturer at the Department of Religious Studies of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Rev. Jonathan Edward Tetteh Adjaottor, has observed that people in leadership positions need patience, hard work and compassion to be successful in their leadership roles.

He said being a leader was an opportunity to serve and not to lord it over others.

Rev. Adjaottor made the observation at a special service for traditional rulers, politicians and institutional heads in the Ada Traditional Area at Big Ada in the Ada East District in the Greater Accra Region.

On the theme: “Grace, Love and Fellowship”, the service was organised through the collaborative effort of the Ghana Evangelism Committee of the Ada–Tongu Zone, the Gideon International Literacy and Evangelism Ghana and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana.

Collaboration

Rev. Adjaottor said in addition to other qualities, leadership also demanded experience and stressed the need for the citizens of the traditional area to rally behind their leaders to champion the development of the area.

He indicated that the people should not hesitate to criticise their leaders constructively, if there was the need, saying that “criticising people in authority is not necessarily a rebellion but rather a way of putting leaders right”.

He noted that the area was endowed with natural resources, including salt, and emphasised the need for effective collaboration between the people and other stakeholders to tap those resources to improve the lives of the people.

Advice

The Paramount Chief of the Ada Traditional Area, Nene Abram Kabu Akuaku III, entreated people in leadership positions to ensure that this year’s general election was conducted peacefully.

He reminded the people that the law would deal with anybody who intended to foment trouble in the area during the electioneering.

The MP for Ada East, Mrs Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah, who represented the Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, urged the people to forge ahead in unity, irrespective of their political inclinations.

“Election is not about the use of abusive language and war but rather who is more qualified to lead the people. Let us allow the electorate to decide and choose the one they deem fit to lead us as President and MP to represent them in Parliament,” she stated.

The Minister of the Big Ada Presbyterian Church, Rev. Samuel Buernor Lawerteh, said the organisers would continue to create a congenial atmosphere for all leaders in the area to play their respective leadership roles in the interest of the people.
