Latter-Day Saints, IRC-Ghana support KMA

IRC-Ghana, a non-profit organisation that works with governments in collaboration with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, has presented relief items worth $25,000 to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for onward distribution to the vulnerable in society.

About 500 households are expected to benefit from the donation, and the targeted beneficiaries include widows, persons with disability (PWDs), the aged and those on the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme.

The items donated were 500 bags of rice, 104 boxes of mackerel, 83 boxes of vegetable oil, 32 boxes of bar soap, 35 cartons of carbolic soap and 104 boxes of canned tomato.

Presentation

Presenting the items, the President of the Kumasi Bantama Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mr Samuel Appiah, said the donation was to complement the government’s effort at supporting the needy and vulnerable who were affected by the COVID-19 situation.

He said the pandemic had brought untold hardships to many people, especially the vulnerable, and added: “As a church, our aim is to seek the welfare of the poor and the needy, hence this gesture.”

The Communication, Learning and Advocacy Coordinator for IRC-Ghana, Mr Abubakari Wumbei, also indicated that the IRC had been working with the government and the local government in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector.

He said that the collaboration had been even more relevant, “knowing that a strong WASH system really leads to resilient systems and can really help us fight this pandemic.”

Consequently, he said, the organisation realigned and readjusted its plans in order to support the government in educating people to adhere to the preventive protocols.

Collaboration

The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Kumasi, Mr Osei Assibey Antwi, who received the items, was grateful to the two organisations for their support to the needy in the metropolis.

He said the IRC had over the years been very supportive of the KMA in sanitation management and commended it for its collaborative role in promoting water, sanitation and hygiene in the metropolis.

The MCE said that collaboration needed to be further strengthened as the IRC’s expertise in WASH was crucial in the management of the pandemic since most of the protocols of the disease required cleanliness.
