Labour unions storm the streets over Tier-2 pension

Some public sector workers in Accra Thursday hit the streets to voice what they claimed is their mistrust of government's desire to control the management of the Tier-2 pension fund.

The workers and government appear to be sharply divided over who plays what role in the management of the pension fund, a situation that has resulted in lawsuits.

Government is unwilling to heed to the demand of the 12 labour unions for the state to handover the management of the fund.

The workers last month declared a strike demanding government hands over the money to their chosen scheme managers.

Government secured a court order forcing a temporary end to the strike.

But the workers remain resolute in their demand and poured onto the streets wearing red clothes to underscore their seriousness.

The protest march which began from the Obra spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, included members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union; the National Association of Graduate Teachers and the Health Service Workers Union.

The workers are opposed to a decision by government to choose a private trustee, Pension Alliance Trust, to oversee the management of their Tier-2 Pension contributions.

Most of them who were dressed in red attire held placards with inscriptions such as ‘’Who is behind the pension allowance’’ ‘’Allow our private scheme to operate’’

Leaders of the various labour unions who addressed the protesters at the end of the demonstration, re-emphasized the position of the labor unions on why government should handover the management of the Tier-2 pension fund.
