Kumasi observes National Sanitation Day

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) last Saturday spearheaded the observation of the National Sanitation Day (NSD). The assembly led residents to clear weeds and choked gutters along some major streets in the city and further intensified an ongoing tree planting exercise.

The tree planting exercise, which is dubbed, "Kumasi Greeny Project," is aimed at planting many trees in the city in a bid to help Kumasi regain its former acclaim as the Garden City of West Africa.

The clean-up exercise was led by the Environmental Unit of the KMA with support from Zoomlion Ghana, a waste management company, and had personnel from the Ghana Fire Service and a KMA task force participating in it.

About 1,300 tree seedlings of varied species, provided by the Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG), a subsidiary of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), were planted over a four-hour period.

The planted tree species included bligliasapida, militia thonningi, terminaliamontalis, polythialongitalia and royal palm.

The Convenor for the Environmental Sub-Committee of the KMA, Nana Yaw Wiredu, said the assembly was determined to improve the biodiversity of the metropolis and make it more “environmental-friendly for residents."

He said the KMA would continue to sensitise the public on the need to protect the environment as well plant more trees in the city.

“When trees are planted, they grow to improve the ecology, reduce temperatures, create aesthetic beauty and make life generally bearable for all,” he said.
