Kumasi: Ash Town ‘money changer’ killed by robbers

Some unknown assailants on a motorbike on Sunday pounced on a ‘money changer’ at Ashanti New Town near Mbrom in Kumasi, shot and killed him and bolted with his money.

Identified as Hasihim Salifu, 63, was the assailants allegedly shot him at the area popularly known for ‘black market’ money exchange and took away his bag, which contained an unspecified amount of money.

The deceased was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The body has since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue.

The police has confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway to arrest the perpetrators.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, DSP Juliana Obeng the deceased, who worked as a black market money changer, operated around the St Louis Training College area at Mbrom and on Sunday, went out as usual to do his business.

Whilst standing by the roadside, the men on the unregistered motorbike appeared and fired at him and robbed him of his money.

She said onlookers called the police hotline to alert the police.
