Kudalor new IGP, Sarpong new head of Immigration

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed the Commissioner of Police (COP) in charge of Operations, Mr John Kudalor, as acting Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Official sources said the President has also appointed Mr Felix Sarpong, the Deputy Director of Operations of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) to act as the Director of Immigration.

He takes over from Dr Peter Wiredu, who has proceeded on leave prior to retirement. Mr Kudalor replaces the current IGP, Mr Mohammed Alhassan, who begins his accumulated leave prior to retirement.

Until his appointment, Mr Kudalor had held the position of Director General of Police Operations from 2009 to date. He has a 27-year wealth of experience in the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and the Ghana Police Service.

A product of the Swedru Senior High and the Aggrey Memorial schools for his GCE Ordinary and Advanced levels, respectively, Mr Kudalor also studied in the then Soviet Union, now Russia, and has since done a number of courses.

He speaks English, Russian and French fluently and lectures in Ethics in Law Enforcement at the Ghana Police Academy. He held several positions, including Head of Investigations and Regional Director of the BNI, Deputy Commander, Special Police Command, and Tema Regional Police Commander.

The outgoing IGP, Mr Alhassan, was appointed acting IGP on February 5, 2013 and confirmed in May 2013 as the substantive when the then IGP, Mr Paul Tawiah Quaye, went on retirement

The Ghana Police Service has a convention of appointing a new IGP in an acting capacity by ushering out the incumbent with a terminal leave. Jockeying for the position had been reportedly intense, with COP Rose Atenga-Bio being tipped to be in the running for the top job.

She would have been the second female to head the Ghana Police Service after Mrs Elizabeth Mills-Robertson, who acted as IGP from January to May 2009. Mr Sarpong, currently the acting Director of Operations of the GIS, is an officer with 36 years of experience.

He worked at some of the major entry points, districts and regional offices and was also one-time Commanding Officer of the GIS Training School at Assin Fosu in the Central Region.

He has participated in internally organised programmes in counter-terrorism, intelligence, as well as refugee and immigration management. He has also undertaken courses in crisis management and could be described as a career Immigration officer. Dr Wiredu was a Commissioner of Police when he was appointed the Director of Immigration.
