He has, however, asked for a redistribution of personnel in addition to further transfers into the region to shore-up the numbers for an even more effective discharge of policing services to the people. He was speaking during a  working visit to the Upper West Region.

Accompanied by the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kwasi Mensah Duku, and his deputy, DCOP Nana Asomahene, and other lieutenants from the regional command, Mr Kudalor led a patrol across the regional capital on Tuesday night into Wednesday morning to monitor the police activities in town and see at first-hand the state of night life in Wa.

Crime reduces

He said the reduction in crime rates — including motorbike theft which on record had reduced by at least 40 per cent in the last six months — were testimonies of the action by the police command to arrest the crime situation in the Upper West Region.

Commending personnel at the various duty posts, Mr Kudalor said sound security was the only craving of the society, stressing that it was that duty that gave the Police Service its sense of legitimacy.

“Irrespective of the circumstances, the average person wants criminals off his back, and the people don’t care how you do it,” he said in his interaction with the police personnel. “All they care about is their safety and security.

“I must commend this command for what I have seen today.  What is important is that we maintain the standards and not slump into complacency,” he advised.

He said upcoming events such as Christmas in December and next year’s general election meant the police would have to tighten their operations to contain any possible skirmishes.

His visit was a follow-up to an earlier official assignment to the region following media reports about an apparent surge in crime rates across the region.

Indeed, that visit triggered a shake-up in the regional command, including a mass transfer to and from the region as well as redistribution of personnel across the seven police districts under the region.

“We know the numbers are still few in the region. Upper West is a special case because it started as a district command before being upgraded to a regional command. In terms of personnel and logistics, the region needs great support because of its strategic position on Ghana’s border with Burkina Faso”.

Earlier in the day, Mr Kudalor interacted with the Wa Naa and his elders as part of his duty tour.
