Koforidua Central Market to undergo renovation

The Koforidua Central Market, the busiest trading outpost in the New Juaben South Municipality in the Eastern Region, is to receive a facelift soon to become a modern facility.

The refurbished market, according to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Isaac Appaw-Gyasi, would give a new face to the municipality.

The market, which was constructed many years ago, lacks access routes for fire fighting vehicles in the event of a fire outbreak.

Addressing assembly members in Koforidua, last weekend, the MCE said he would not rest until the market was transformed to a modern facility and appealed to the assembly members for their maximum support to complete the project.

The assembly, Mr Appaw-Gyasi indicated, would also construct shops for another trading outpost in Koforidua, the Agartha Market.

Projects

The MCE said construction of the ongoing Zongo Market project was at its final stage and would soon be completed and handed over to the beneficiary traders.

To ensure an even distribution of social amenities within the municipality, Mr Appaw-Gyasi told the assembly that the Municipal Planning Coordinating Unit (MPCU) of the assembly had already started work for the next four years (2022-2025), to embark on community engagement in all the assembly's 34 electoral areas to identify the needs of the communities in terms of social amenities.

He said issues that came up during the engagement with the communities included the lack of public places of convenience, poor drainage systems, poor road networks, lack of potable water, limited number of streetlights, non-functional streetlights in certain areas, a high rate of crime in some areas, unemployment and lack of access roads to some of the communities.

Ongoing projects

He also touched on other ongoing projects such as the assembly's office complex, the Nsukwao Drainage Basin project, a rehabilitation centre and dormitories at Nyamekrom, which, he said would be completed soon to improve the socio-economic conditions of the people within the municipality.

He also mentioned the construction of a slaughter house at Magazine and a two-bedroom six-unit apartment block for some technical staff, explaining that these were legacy projects expected to be completed within the stipulated time frame by the government.

Plans, Mr Appaw-Gyasi explained, were also far advanced to transform the Koforidua Jackson Park into a modern events centre.

On sanitation, Mr Appaw-Gyasi said the assembly was partnering the waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, to further improve the disposal of waste in the municipality.
