A committee, chaired by Dr Kwaku Appiagyei has thus been set up to mobilise resources from the staff and the general public, as well as corporate bodies, towards the objective.

The two projects are estimated at about GH¢ 503,000 and would to be completed within 10 months.

The projects are to help decongest the maternity and children’s wards and also reduce neo-natal mortality to increase the bed capacity and improve upon health care delivery.

Live births

In 2014, the hospital recorded 2,415 live births, out of which 1960 were normal deliveries, the highest in the Volta Region, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The hospital has 24 beds and three delivery beds at the labour ward.

There are 16 beds at the children’s ward. The hospital has a record of an average monthly admission of 102 patients. It has a neonatal record of about 4.99 per cent per 1,000 live births as against the national average of four per 1,000.

A recent peer review of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the hospital scored the facility zero out of 25 because the reviewers felt the hospital was “baby harmful.”

A project proposal in support of the objective said that the hospital which was upgraded from a health centre in 1998 provides health care to about 182,000 residents in the catchment area and that due to its geographic location it is patronised by patients in transit to and from other countries.

The document said the hospital provided specialised services such as general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, mental health, HIV and AIDS counselling and testing, eye clinic, diabetic clinic and a tuberculosis unit.

The Aflao Municipal Hospital was declared the best district hospital in the country in 2005 and has since 2011, placed second in the Volta Region.
