The first phase of the project, whixh is near completion at the Eye Centre, is being undertaken jointly by a US-based non-governmental organisation, Himalayan Cataract Project, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr Joseph Akpaloo, made this known at a media briefing to assess his performance after one year in office.

The provision of the solar system, he said, was one of a number of projects being undertaken. Others include the re-tooling of the hospital’s Dialysis Centre with the supply and installation of five dialysis machines in conjuction with D. Med Healthcare of Germany.

Dr. Akpaloo outlined a number of completed projects as well as on-going and  up-coming ones, all aimed at making the hospital the most preferred referral centre in the country.

ChallengesHe said the hospital’s main challenge was the completion of a 40-year-old Maternity and Children’s Block, which had been stalled due to lack of funds.

The hospital authorities, he said, had mandated a different construction firm to reassess the project and present a ‘reasonable budget’ for it to take off.

He further stated that the hospital was still struggling to replace over-aged, over-used and obsolete equipment.
