The Jomoro District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr George William Somiah, made this known during a fund-raising ceremony at this year’s annual "Nawule Baye Boe" festival. He called for effective collaboration between the assembly and the chiefs and people of Nawule to ensure the project would bring some relief to the people.

Currently, the assembly has successfully extended water from the system to some communities in the district such as Ezinlibo, Ndumesuazo and Bonyere Junction.

Philanthropist

An Accra-based businessman, Mr Henry Ofori, donated GH¢5, 000 towards the water project at Nawule.

Mr Ofori, who was the special guest of honour at the ceremony, promised further support for the early completion of the project in honour of Ambassador Lee Ocran, who is a native of the town and an intimate friend of the philanthropist.

Mr Ofori, also a local partner and shareholder of Hydrocol company, operators of the desalination plant at Teshie Nungua water project in Accra, said engineers from the company would immediately be sent to the community to ensure the take-off of the project by the end of the year.

Boreholes

The Tufuhene of the town, Nana Kwasi Bonyah, said the people, through hard work, had converted two hand pumps in the community into mechanised boreholes fitted with engines which they now wish to extend to all corners of the town to enable residents to tap water to their individual homes.

Honour

The occasion was used to honour Ambassador Lee Ocran,  Ghana’s former Ambassador to South Africa and Cote d’Ivoire for his immense contribution towards the development of the area.

In a citation accompanying the honour, Mr Ocran was commended for facilitating the tarring of the Jomoro township roads that had been linked to the Takoradi-Half Assini trunk road.

He also contributed to the construction of schools and extension of electricity to the town, among other interventions.

Appreciation

Ambassador Ocran expressed appreciation to the chiefs and people of the area for the honour done him and his friend at this year's festival and pledged their continuous support to the people.

Over GH¢19,000 was realised in an appeal for funds.
