The school was constructed by the Sustainable Development Institute of Ghana (SDI Ghana), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based at Ajumako Bisease, with a grant of $95,400 which it received from Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) Scheme.

According to the leadership of SDI Ghana, the educational facility, provided with a library, an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) centre and other amenities, replaces a dilapidated school block constructed in the early 1930s at Salem, an area within Ajumako Bisease in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District in the Central Region.

Inaugurating the school, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Kaoru Yoshimura, said the government and people of Japan had instituted the GGHSP Scheme to support the construction of social amenities in needy communities, particularly in Africa

“Therefore this school is for the people of Ajumako Bisease and their neighbours,” he said.

Mr Kaoru implored the students, staff of the school and all the beneficiary communities to take good care of the school “in order to preserve it for use by generations yet unborn”.

The Ambassador then expressed appreciation to the SDI for utilising the grant to do exactly what it was meant for, which was to construct a school block with ancillary facilities.

The Coordinator of the SDI Ghana, Mr Ralph Osei Agyeman, thanked the Japanese Ambassador, as well as Messrs Joseph Nkum Okyere and George Ortsin of the Bisease Development Association; the chiefs and people of Ajumako Bisease; and Ms Ivy Macaiver Quaye, the District Director of Education, for the priceless contribution “towards the successful completion of the school project.”

He reiterated the need to maintain the school, including keeping its surroundings clean, “to preserve it for use over decades”.

Ms Quaye also thanked Japan for sponsoring the construction of schools, adding that “good school facilities provide the conducive environment for teaching and learning and help to raise educational standards.”

She called for more of such support for the district and pledged the support of the education directorate to promote effective teaching and learning in all the schools in the district.

Earlier Nana Okyerebea Kumasa, the Nkosuohemaa of Ajumako Bisease, delivered a welcome address on behalf of Nana Okofa Kwakoragyan, the Odikro (chief) of Ajumako Bisease. She thanked the government and people of Japan and the leadership of SDI Ghana for providing the new school.

“Assistance, partnership and collaboration like what has been provided by the Japanese and the SDI are what our country needs to develop,” the chief said and called for more support for his town.
