Interplast donates GH¢1.2m to COVID-19 Fund

The Managing Director of Interplast, West Africa's leading producer of plastic pipe systems, Mr Hayssam Fakhry, has said the fight against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) should not be the responsibility of only duty bearers and frontline health workers but everyone who is concerned about life.

He said the devastating effect of the infection, not just in Ghana but the world over, required a concerted effort that would pool resources and logistics, as well as human resource, to win the fight, and called on everyone to provide the support in their own small way to support the effort in Ghana.

Mr Fakhry made the call when he led a team from Interplast to donate GH¢1.2 million to the COVID-19 Trust Fund set up by the government to support people who would be affected by the impact of the disease.

The cheque for the amount was presented to the Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Mrs Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.

Everyone’s concern

Mr Fakhry said he believed he was not the only one concerned about the situation, noting that everyone who had empathy should be worried about the rapid spread of the virus around the world.

“We should all be concerned about the rapid spread of the pandemic; not just how it is affecting our way of lives but also the manner in which it is claiming lives. You look at what is happening around the world and you cannot help but be concerned,” he said.

He said the donation to the COVID-19 Fund was to support efforts by the state aimed at combating the spread of the disease in Ghana.

More education

Mrs Osei Opare encouraged the management of organisations and industries to use all channels to step up education of their members of staff on best practices at these critical times.

She also encouraged all to go by the social distancing and hygiene protocols.

She urged people to be personally responsible for their safety by abiding by the stay-at-home directive.

“Yes, the government has issued the directive for people in some areas where cases have been recorded to stay at home for a while to curb the spread of the virus. As individuals, we owe it to ourselves to be safe and avoid contracting the infection by staying at home. That is the least we can do,” she emphasised.
