Indian hemp suspects abandon truck on seeing the police

The Akropong Divisional Police Command over the weekend impounded a total of 5,040 slabs of suspected Indian hemp concealed in branded sacks.

According to the Police Divisional Commander of the area, Chief Superintendent Charles Kofi Adu, while his men were on their usual patrol duties on the Adukrom - Asseseso road, a Kia vehicle with registration number WR 3991 - 14 was spotted descending from Asseseso to Somanya Junction around 7 pm.

He said upon seeing the police the driver of the vehicle and other occupants started behaving funnily and wanted to reverse and bolt away. However before the police could move in the occupants of the vehicle including the driver who removed the keys from and vehicle, took to their heels and abandoned the car.

When it was inspected, the police saw 35 bags of suspected Indian hemp, 64 bags of cement and 84 sacks with each containing 60 slabs.

Meanwhile the police is conducting investigations into the issue to know the owner of the vehicle.

The Eastern Region has in recent times become the hub of activities of Indian hemp peddlers. In February this year a Mercedes Benz container truck carrying sixty four bags of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp was intercepted by the Eastern regional police command.

Each bag was estimated to contain about 80 slabs of the suspected narcotic.

Prior to that, the police at Nkawkaw seized 204 bags of the substance at Apesika from 21 households.
