The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has honoured six service officers at a special staff durbar in Accra for their dedication to duty.

The officers intercepted 1,950 bags of NPK fertilisers meant for the Planting for Food and Jobs programme on August 1, 2019 at Fielmuo, an unapproved route at the Ghana–Burkina Faso border in the Upper West Region, and refused an offer of GH¢25,000 from the alleged smugglers after their arrest.

The officers include the Hamile Sector Commander, Chief Superintendent Felix Agyeman-Bosompem, Assistant Superintendent Razak Mohammed and Inspector Prince Osei Bonsu.

The rest are Assistant Inspector Benjamin Duah, Immigration Control Officer (ICO) Godfred Amponsah and Assistant Immigration Control Officer 1 (AICO I) Maurice Logochura, who are all stationed in the Upper West Region.

Each person received a certificate, an undisclosed amount of money and a shield. It is the second time in two months that the GIS has honoured its men and women for showing diligence in their duties.

Commendation

Addressing the durbar held at the headquarters of the GIS last Wednesday, the Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI), Mr Kwame Asuah Takyi, commended the officers for acting swiftly on the call from an informant and also refusing to be lured with money.

That, the comptroller-general said, was a mark of integrity, especially when the needs of man were endless and resources getting increasingly scarce.

“It speaks well of you to have rejected such huge sum of money, GH¢25,000, in spite of economic challenges,” a statement issued by the Ghana Immigration Service noted.

“You have placed the interest of the nation first and this shows a high sense of patriotism and I encourage all officers to emulate this good deed,” Mr Takyi added.

He explained that the certificates and shields were being given to them for posterity sake, saying “It is not just paper but something your children will look on and be proud of you.”

The CGI reassured the officers at the durbar that they would soon be bearing arms to enable them to confront border crimes with the needed ruthlessness.

Temptation

The Deputy Comptroller-General (DCG) in Charge of Finance and Administration, Mrs Judith Dzokoto-Lomoh, who presented one of the awards, said: “They were not led into temptation but were delivered from it.”

The DCG in charge of Legal, Research and Monitoring, Ms Baaba Asare, urged them to keep up the good work and that, the honour done them should inspire them to do more.

“This is a good example for others in similar position to emulate,” she added.

The DCG in charge of Command Post and Operations, Mr Laud Kwesi Affrifah, who was full of praise for the officers, noted how heart-warming it was when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his recent tour of the Upper West Region acknowledged the service and the efforts it was making to national development.
