ICT library, community centre to be constructed at Sowutuom

The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Ms Sun Baohong, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ms Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, have jointly cut the sod for the construction of an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) library and community centre at Sowutuom in the Anyaa-Sowutuom Constituency of the Greater Accra Region.

The facility will house a large-scale ICT library, a community centre, two offices and a lobby.

The centre, which is to be constructed by Qingjian International Company Ghana, is expected to be completed in four months.

The project is under a China-Ghana Friendship ICT Laboratory project. It is part of a China-Africa-People-to-People Friendly Action of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

In 2014, the Chinese Embassy in Ghana constructed eight ICT classrooms in seven regions.

Beneficiaries

The facility, which will be located on the main campus of the Maranatha University College (MUC), will benefit residents of Sowutuom, Lapaz, Kwashieman and surrounding communities.

Ms Baohong said the centre would be the first multi-functional public service facility in the constituency and help both students and workers to study online.

She said the Chinese government would continue to assist Ghana and other African countries to fast-track growth for the well-being of the people.

“The Chinese government has continuously built human resource in Ghana. Last year, for instance, 1,200 Ghanaians received training in China, and that number ranked tops among all foreigners who received training in China,” she said.

Ms Baohong declared that the embassy would soon donate teaching equipment to selected schools in the country to facilitate teaching and learning.

Government’s focus

Ms Botchwey, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency, said the focus of the government was to provide every community with ICT infrastructure to facilitate the development of technology in every part of the country.

She expressed appreciation to the Chinese government for its immense support.

The President of the MUC, Rev. Dr Simon Degbe, underscored the importance of ICT to the socio-economic development of the country and expressed his appreciation for the citing of the centre on the university campus.

For his part, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ga Central, Dr Emmanuel Lamptey, said he would constantly supervise the project to ensure it was executed on schedule.
