Ho-based microfinance company officials disappear as clients appeal to BoG to help retrieve deposits

More than 100 customers of a microfinance company, Shine Credit Limited in Ho, have appealed to the Bank of Ghana to fish out owners of the company and help them to retrieve their deposits with the company.

According to the petitioners, all branches of the company had currently been closed and they had lost contact with the chief executive of the company.

The company was alleged to have offered its customers a 30 per cent interest on their deposits after six months or reinvestment. It was believed to have had branches in Accra, Tema, Kumasi, Ho and  Ashaiman.

When the Daily Graphic visited what used to be the offices of Shine Credit Limited, a new tenant was found to have taken over the place.

Press release

A press release jointly signed by Messrs Eben Dzikunu and Teddy Prempeh, spokespersons for the aggrieved customers, said public and civil servants, pensioners, churches, traders, transport owners, welfare unions and students had all fallen victim to what was now feared to be a scam by the company.

The release said management of the company had failed to pay back the initial deposits of customers as well as the interests that had accrued on them, and added that management kept on making promises to refund the deposits but they were never fulfilled.

Dashed hopes

“The high hopes of the customers to reap dividends on their investments have, therefore, been dashed,” the release said.

It said currently, some of the customers whose deposits had been locked up with the company were unable to meet their financial obligations to their dependants and in other respects.

The release further claimed that some of the customers had fallen ill as a result of the shock they suffered following the disappearance of the owners of the company.
