GRA staff clean Kotokuraba market

The Central Regional office of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) last weekend embarked on a three hour-clean up exercise at the Kotokuraba market in Cape Coast and used the opportunity to educate the traders on the need to pay taxes.

Workers of the GRA swept the market and desilted the drains.

The authority also used the opportunity to present 10 waste containers and cleaning kits to the market.

A Principal Revenue Officer of GRA, Mr Philip Kankam, who led the exercise said the exercise aimed at contributing to the national sanitation agenda and ensuring a cleaner environment.

He indicated that markets were major sources of revenue for the authority and it was essential that the traders operated in a healthy environment and to stay healthy.

Healthy people, more taxes

“GRA needs a healthy taxpaying population to be able to achieve its mandate," he said.

He noted that it was expected that all Ghanaians joined the efforts at improving the sanitation in their communities and to stay healthy.

“Sanitation progress in Ghana requires the efforts of all because its negative impact affects everyone and to combat sanitation challenges we must all change our attitudes towards waste management and contribute to a healthier environment,” he said.

Pay taxes

He advised the traders to pay their taxes willingly with the understanding that it would be used to develop the communities and enhance their lives.

The assembly member for Kotokuraba Market, Mr Paul MacCarthy who received the items for the market thanked the pledged to ensure the market was clean always.
