Mr Roland Affail Monnie, GJA PresidentThe Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has donated GH¢50,000 to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) to support its 18th GJA Awards.

The acting head of Corporate Affairs of the GNPC, Mr Eric Pwadura, said the decision by the GNPC to sponsor this year’s GJA Awards was influenced by the company’s commitment to develop local content in line with its corporate social responsibility programmes with focus on education, sports and health.

Mr Pwadura described the media as a strategic ally of the GNPC’s operations, adding “We view the GJA Awards as a strategic platform to empower journalists, nurture talents, harness skills, reward talents and expand opportunities”.

He said the GNPC believed in building a stronger and more positive relationship with the media, adding “We are, therefore, planning media engagements to provide the platform for regular sharing of information on our operations and strategies with you.”

The President of the GJA, Mr Roland Affail Monnie, thanked the GNPC for the gesture and called on corporate Ghana to support such programmes.

He underlined the need for an active and responsible media in a growing democratic state such as Ghana and called on Ghanaians to help shape the media.

“There is the need for corporate Ghana to take a keener interest in media development,” he noted.

Mr Monnie said although the media had chalked up some successes, they still had some shortfalls, and called on Ghanaians to help make the media better.

Mr Monnie said this year’s event had been slated for November 2, 2013.

President John Dramani Mahama will be the guest of honour, with the Chief Justice, Mrs Georgina Wood, as the chairperson for the programme, scheduled to take place at the Banquet Hall, State House, Accra.
