GIMPA to host confab on international criminal justice

The Faculty of Law of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) will, from March 17 to 18, 2016, host a conference on international criminal justice to critically review trends, emerging developments and challenges confronting the law in specific fields.

This is the first of what will be annual conferences that present an opportunity to gather a community of scholars and academics, experts and practitioners.

“As a faculty, we are convinced that the platform of the conference presents an opportunity to network in our thinking, works and strategies as we plot to overcome existing challenges and nascent obstacles,” the Dean of the Faculty of Law, GIMPA, Mr E. Kofi Abotsi, said.

Collaborators

The faculty is organising the event in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and the Attorney-General’s Department, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Accra Leitner Centre for International Law and Justice and the Fordham University School of Law in the United States of America (USA).

The conference is on the theme: “The International Criminal Court (ICC) and Africa: A Discussion on Legitimacy”.

The theme focuses on the controversies plaguing the international criminal justice regime and seeks to explore and promote better dialoguing and engagement between critics and supporters of the court and its work.

Expectations

“The Faculty of Law hopes that the conference will create a deliberative space where constructive discussions will enable participants-stakeholders to engage on the difficult issues raised by the topics and themes highlighted.

“A key outcome of the conference will be to confront perceptions and clarify issues that promote suspicion and skepticism on the ICC and its work.

“Invariably, therefore, critical dialectics dealing with the necessity of the court and the legitimacy of its work will be reviewed and form part of the conference discussion.

“We are pleased to gather this rich community of scholars, experts and practitioners and look forward to a rich and engaging event,” Mr Abotsi added.
