The Ghana Prisons Service has commenced investigations into the conduct of a prison warden who led prisoners at the Ankaful Prison Annex to a drinking spot last Saturday.

The prisoners had been accompanied to the drinking spot (akpeteshie bar) at Duakro by the prison warden who was supervising them.

They bought cigarettes and took some shots of the local gin, akpeteshie.

Duakro is on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway, about 400 metres from the second gate of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

Action

The Chief Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service, Deputy Superintendent of Prisons Mr Vitalis Aiyeh, told the Daily Graphic that it was an offence for prisoners to take alcohol, either inside the prisons or outside.

He said it was on that basis that the authorities had initiated the investigations.

He said it was also wrong for any officer to give any kind of support to any prisoner to engage in any illegal act.

Mr Aiyeh said anyone found culpable would be ruthlessly dealt with, in line with the laid down regulations of the service.
