Waste management group, Zoomlion Ghana, has given an assurance it has adequate personnel and logistics to mitigate the public health threats posed by the recent floods in the Volta Region.
The Volta Regional Manager of the group, Emmanuel Amemakalor, made the pledge prior to a four-hour disinfection and disinfestation exercise at the Ho Central Market last Wednesday.
The exercise, in collaboration with the Volta Regional Coordinating Council (VRCC), is expected to be carried out in all 18 municipalities and districts and ends on September 19.
Mr Amemakalor said although the floods in the region were not as severe as they were in other parts of the country, the public health threats could not be ignored in the region.
He explained threats of malaria from mosquitoes and risks of cholera and other diseases might well be carried by the flowing water into the communities.
For that matter, Mr Amemakalor said the exercise not only focused on markets, but also on lorry parks, various public facilities, including toilets and schools.
“This exercise is being undertaken for free as part of our corporate social responsibility,” Mr Amemakalor added.
Keep clean surroundings
The Regional Environmental Health Officer (REHO), Stella Kumedzro, said the fumigation exercise was a step in the right direction to eliminate the run-offs of faecal matter and vectors of illness from the flowing water, which might be looking for new habitats.
She entreated households to keep their surroundings clean all the time.
The exercise was later carried out at Hodzo, near Ho, which was worst hit by the floods.
