Sunyani mourns queenmother

Commercial activities in the Sunyani Municipality came to a halt yesterday as the Sunyani Traditional Council observed the one week funeral rites for the late Sunyanihemaa, Nana Yaa Puduo II.

This followed the imposition of a ban on commercial activities in the municipality by the traditional council, to the extent that there were no activities in the main Sunyani Market and even on the streets of the town.

Most places in the municipality, including the central business district, were silent while the usual traffic jam at the Cocoa House Roundabout was absent. Basic and second cycle educational institutions were also closed as residents stayed indoors.

However, in the vicinity of the Sunyani Palace, located on the Sunyani-Atronie Road where the funeral rites were being observed, there was a beehive of activities as the Omanhene of the traditional area, Nana Bosoma Asor Nkrawiri, and his sub-chiefs as well as people from all walks of life, had converged to mark the occasion.

Mourning

All mourners who thronged the funeral grounds were dressed in black, while trees and electricity poles in the municipality were draped in red and black ribbons.

The Omanhene and his sub-chiefs sat in state throughout the day to receive mourners and delegations from far and near.

Sounds of throbbing traditional music from traditional drummers, firing of muskets and horn blowing filled the atmosphere as chiefs and their retinues made their way to the venue amid wailing by women grieving over the fall of a ‘mighty tree.’
