A building contractor, Nana Kofi Owusu, has been enstooled as the new chief of Suhyen in the New Juaben Traditional Area in the Eastern Region.
Nana Owusu, whose stool name is Okogyeaman Owusu Basapon II, succeeds Okogyeaman Ankomah Basapon II, who died about five years ago.
Odehyie Owusu, aged 62, was chosen from the Asona Family of Asante Juaben and also became the Mponuahene of the New Juaben Traditional Area.
He lived in the United Kingdom for years to undertake further studies and returned to Ghana to focus on the building and construction firm he had established.
Traditional rites
After performing the traditional rites, Okogyeaman Owusu Basapon II was carried shoulder-high and paraded through the Suhyen town amid cheers from the townspeople.
At a traditional ceremony jointly held at the Suhyen Palace and the Yiadom Hwedie Palace, the Omanhene of New Juaben, Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, expressed concern that Suhyen had not had a chief for about five years.
That, he stated, retarded the area's development initiatives and at the same time, did not encourage investors to the town.
He advised the new chief to serve the people with humility and dignity, not to lord it over them, and urged them to support him in succeeding.
Peace & unity
Daasebre Boateng also called on the new chief to unite all the people of Suhyen, including aggrieved ones, to enable him to prosecute his vision for the town.
"You have a huge task ahead of you that needs to be performed credibly. Humble yourself and do the right things to succeed,” the omanhene stated.
The Appianyinasehene (sub-chief) of the Juaben Traditional Area, Nana Kwanin Kwanfo II, who represented the Paramount Chief of Asante Juaben, Daasebre Otuo Siriboe II, advised the new chief to promote peace and harmony in the area.
Wisdom
Nana Kwanfo called on the people of the area to support him with their wisdom, enabling him to discharge his traditional duties as expected.
Swearing the oath of allegiance, Okogyeaman Basapon II said his ultimate vision was to restore absolute peace at Suhyen to accelerate development in the area.
"I will serve the people of Suhyen with humility and dignity, so I need everybody to give me the needed support to rule Suhyenman and Mponua to make the area a development hub," Okogyeaman Basapon indicated.
Investors
Okogyeaman Basapon gave the assurance that he would work with interested stakeholders to attract investors to the area.
Present at the ceremony were the various sub-chiefs from New Juaben and Asante Juaben, queenmothers of the area, other chiefs from all walks of life, royals from the Asona Family, religious bodies, family and friends and people of the Suhyen community.
