St Augustine’s past students host winners of NSMQ

CHeers and a thrilling sensation characterised the scene last Saturday in Accra as the St Augustine’s College Past Students Union (APSU) organised a farewell ceremony for the winners of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), before they left for school in Cape Coast.

The school emerged winners of the 2019 National Science and Maths Quiz after upstaging five-time record champions Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School, Legon, Accra and three-time winners and defending champions,  St. Peter’s Senior High School, Nkwatia in the final.

The victory, therefore, ended the 12-year trophy drought at the NSMQ of the school and has added another title to their only win which dates back to 2007.

The event

The farewell ceremony, characterised by green and white, representing the colours of the school, was an old school reunion for some of the members present, as they took the opportunity to reminisce about their student days and brief each other on how situations have been since they last met.

The excitement and uproar grew stronger as the contestants arrived and walked through the crowd to the high table.

Commendation

The APSU National President, Dr Ernest Anthony Osei, in his remarks, commended the students for uplifting the school to such a height.

“We are all very much excited by the work they have done, we have all seen the gift and talents we have in our alma mater.

“Initially, when they promised us that they were going to bring the trophy, we were all sceptical but they have delivered, we are much grateful,” Dr Osei stated.

Assurance

He said it was years of dedication and sacrifices by both the school and the past students which had earned them such a victory, and gave an assurance that they were not going to be reluctant; they were going to push harder to enable them to win the trophy consecutively for five years.

“Last year, we were not part of the competition, in fact we couldn’t even win at the regionals and by the decision of the National Executive Committee of the APSU, we established a NSMQ Committee and through that move, we have been able to achieve this glory, this is something we planned for and through that effort, God has blessed us with it,” the national president added.
