SSNIT strengthens governance oversight of investee companies

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has introduced a strategic reporting framework for its investee companies.

The framework is aimed at strengthening corporate governance, enhancing Board oversight and improving the quality of reporting across its investment portfolio.

The reporting framework will also ensure that SSNIT’s investments continue to deliver sustainable value for its members and stakeholders.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting with Board representatives of SSNIT's investee companies last Friday at the La Palm Royal Beach Resort, the Chairman of the SSNIT Board of Trustees, Nana Ansah Sasraku III, reminded directors that their decisions have a direct impact on the retirement security of millions of workers in Ghana.

He emphasised that Board representatives are custodians of public trust, as their decisions will influence the performance of investee companies and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Pension Scheme.

“The introduction of a reporting framework for Board Representatives demonstrates our commitment to active shareholder stewardship.

These initiatives are not intended to ensure that our investments are properly monitored and that shareholder value is consistently enhanced”, he said.

Prudent management

The Director-General of SSNIT, Kwesi Afreh Biney, commended the investee companies, particularly those in the banking sector, as well as Labadi Beach Hotel, MTN Ghana and Africa World Airlines, for declaring dividends in 2025.

He said their performance reflects sound corporate governance and prudent management and encouraged all investee companies to pursue sustainable growth to maximise returns for contributors and pensioners.

Board representatives welcomed the initiative, describing the framework as a timely guide for improving strategic reporting and strengthening engagement between SSNIT and its investee companies.

They proposed that the forum be held bi-annually to sustain dialogue on governance and performance and called for stronger investment support for viable companies as well as a review of the alignment between SSNIT's shareholding and Board representation.

The maiden breakfast engagement brought together more than 80 Board representatives from SSNIT's investee companies across the country, reaffirming their shared commitment to sound corporate governance and long-term value creation.
