The President of the Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon, Accra, Rev Professor Frederick Mawusi Amevenku, was last Saturday elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG).
Rev. Prof. Amevenku, who is also the Minister of the EPCG Kisseman District, thus becomes the 15th Moderator of the General Assembly of the church.
The election came at the tail end of the 12th General Assembly of the church at Ho-Kpodzi.
Rev. Prof. Amevenku secured 111 votes, representing 72 per cent of the total votes cast, to emerge victorious over his contender, Rev. Prof. Daniel Bruce, who garnered 41 votes, representing 26.8 per cent, while one vote was rejected.
The Moderator-elect is a professor of New Testament Studies and Biblical Hermeneutics, with research and teaching interests in mother-tongue theologising, the Gospels, Pauline Studies, Disability Hermeneutics, and Biblical Interpretation of the African context, among other areas.
The distinguished scholar was commissioned into the ordained ministry of the EPCG in 2005.
He pastored several districts and congregations of the church, including Kpedze, Ashalley Botwe, Nima, Adentan, Tetegu and Kisseman.
Rev. Prof. Amevenku, 56, also currently serves as the National President of the EPCG Pastors’ Association.
He joined the faculty of the Trinity Theological Seminary in 2011 and has since risen through the academic and administrative ranks to become the President of the institution.
Relinquish
By his election, Rev. Prof. Amevenku is expected to relinquish his current leadership roles and assume office as Moderator of the General Assembly of EPCG on January 1, 2027.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic prior to a thanksgiving service at the Dela Cathedral at Ho-Kpodzi last Sunday, the married father of two said his priority as the head of the EPCG would be discipleship.
“We must all be obedient and model Christ,” he added.
