Rains cause gridlock in Accra

Moderate rainfall in Accra yesterday morning gave yet another indication that the flooding situation is not out of sight.

After about an hour of rain, there was some flooding along major roads of Accra such as the Busia Highway and Kaneshie, in particular, the Hansonic/Dansoman Junction along the same stretch, Banana Inn, Abeka, the Spanner Junction near the Accra mall on the Independence Avenue and the Old Weija Barrier on the N1, among others.

The rain, therefore, caused a gridlock on these stretches around the capital city. Some residents and motorists called for pragmatic steps to deal with the situation.

Kumawu in the Ashanti Region, Techiman, Kintampo and Nkoranza, all in the Bono East Region, also recorded some rainfall.

Weather updates provided by the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) early in the morning yesterday indicated a rainstorm over the transition belt and some areas in the northern sector which would produce thunderstorms with rain of varying intensities over those areas.

It forecast that the condition would persist till late afternoon, followed by cloudy conditions.

“The rest of the country will be under the influence of this storm with chances of rain and thunderstorms expected over most areas of the country today,” the forecast added.
