President cuts sod for sea defence project in Ningo-Prampram

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cut the sod for the construction of a $70-million sea defence and land reclamation project in Ningo-Prampram in the Greater Accra Region.

The five-kilometre stretch of work is expected to be completed within four years.

The First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, who traces her lineage to the area, is said to have advocated the project to help expose the area to investors to improve the livelihoods of the people.

It will also enable the people to carry out their fishing and other commercial activities.

Durbar

At a durbar of the chiefs and the people of Ningo-Prampram, President Akufo-Addo thanked them for their support and warm reception.

The President’s visit to the area marked the final day of his three-day working tour of the region.

He said Ningo-Prampram was one of the most important tourist destinations in the country, for which reason efforts were being made to protect the area from sea erosion.

“That is why we have made this decision. But we are not just responding to the erosion; the contract also includes the reclamation of the land for the establishment of a mini harbour, so that we give value to the entire project.

“It is going to cost us a lot of money, more than GH¢300 million, but we have a very good contractor, Global Consolidated Company, and we are counting on it to work according to schedule and also be on budget,” the President stated.

Request

Responding to a request by the acting President of the Ningo Traditional Council, Nene Karnor Atiapa III, for the division of Ningo-Prampram into two districts, President Akufo-Addo explained: “The principle is that you can have two constituencies in one district, but you cannot have two districts in one constituency.

“So what we have to do is urge the Electoral Commission (EC), which is responsible for the creation of constituencies, to create two for Prampram and Ningo. Once that is done, then it is a straightforward matter for the President also to create the Ningo and the Prampram districts."

He further assured the chiefs and the people of more development projects, especially the area being the home of his mother-in-law.

Appeal

Nene Atiapa appealed to President Akufo-Addo to help improve the road network in the area, particularly the Dawhenya-Accra and the Ningo-Tsopoli roads.

He asked Ghanaians to be patient with the government, as it was doing a good job, adding that the President must be re-elected to complete the development projects he had embarked upon.

Work on rail line project

Earlier, President Akufo-Addo had inspected work on the Afienya-Ashaiman rail line project.

The project is part of the 97-kilometre railway line from Tema to Mpakadan in the Eastern Region through the Volta Region, at a cost of $448 million.

It is expected to be completed in August 2020.

The President also inspected a workshop for the repair and retrofitting of coaches in Tema.

In the Ledzokuku and the Krowor constituencies, he inspected construction works on the 7.5-km LEKMA Hospital road, which stretches from Teshie Lascala, near the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, and joins the Spintex Road at the Manet Junction.

The two-lane dual carriageway, which is expected to be completed in 18 months, is estimated at GH¢87 million.

President Akufo-Addo later called on the La Traditional Council, where he commiserated with the La Royal Family and the people of the area over the demise of the La Mantse, Nii Tetteh Kpobi Tsuru.

He paid tribute to the late traditional ruler and promised to support the family to give the chief a befitting burial.
