The MTN Ghana Foundation has inaugurated a Science, Technology, Mathematics and Engineering (STEM) learning centre for the Asafo M/A Basic School in the Asokwa Municipality in the Ashanti Region.
Executed at cost of GH¢946,189.71, the new state of the art facility which is the second centre in the region to be constructed by the foundation, is expected to inspire the next generation of engineers, programmers, innovators, and technology leaders in the country.
It is equipped with 35 all-in-one computer workstations, refurbished desks, furniture and a dedicated robotics training equipment and kits that will introduce the pupils to the technologies shaping the world they would inherit.
The idea behind the project began in 2022 when the then Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Selom Adadibo, visited this very school as part of our yellow care activities, an annual staff volunteer programme and donated laptops to support learning.
During that visit, the headmistress raised a concern about the state of the school’s ICT centre that stayed with them.
The school's ICT centre, though built as far back as 2017, was not serving its purpose as it had been handed over without any computer or piece of auxiliary equipment inside it.
Following that visit, the MTN team together with its partner SEED conducted a thorough assessment of the facility resulting in the identification of significant deficiencies were identified with the general state of the centre requiring far more than computers.
Civil works, including roofing repairs, repainting and decoration, and improved security for the facility were carried out.
Others works done were full electrical installation and installation of new air conditioning units to make the facility a comfortable learning environment.
Significant milestone
Speaking at a ceremony to officially hand over the project to the school authorities, the General Manager of MTN Ghana’s Northern Business District, Nii Adotey Mingle, said the centre represented a significant milestone in MTN Ghana Foundation's commitment to advancing education and digital inclusion in Ghana.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Asokwa, Amoh Kamel, thanked the foundation for the generous investment as it would go a long way to benefit all pupils across the municipality in terms of STEM education.
In a remark, the Chief of Asokwa, Nana Fe-Baamoah II, who commended the MTN Ghana Foundation for the gesture, asked the school authorities and the assembly to monitor the project and ensure its regular maintenance to last longer.
