Ghana Institute of Journalism celebrates 60 years anniversary

As part of the 60th anniversary celebration of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, plans are underway to establish a world class digital hub with leading- edge technology for the provision of digital audio- visual, Online news and most up-to-date graphics and advertising design.

Speaking at the grand durbar of the anniversary celebration on Wednesday, October 16, the Rector of the Institute (GIJ) Professor Kwamena Kwansah -Aidoo urged Stake-holders, friends of the institute and all individuals to keep their doors open for contribution to the fore mentioned project.

A Gh¢100 million endowment fund was established at the launched of the anniversary celebration in March this year, to help secure the future and also proceed urgent projects of the Institute.

The Ghana institute of journalism formally known as the school of journalism built by Dr Kwame Nkrumah in 1959 started as a department of the Accra technical institute with 12 students, in 2006 parliament passed an Act to transform it into a degree awarding institution and a mandate to award its own degrees and diplomas by the Ghana Accreditation Board in 2009.The institute obtained approval from the National Accreditation board to offer degree programmes unique to the school.

From enrollment of less than 1000 students in 2009, the school now admits about 5000 students every year.

The school have produced dynamic and competent individuals both in the field of communication and diverse corporate industries.

The Rector stated that the primary goal of the school is to produce distinctive, competent and analytical communicators. He urged students to take advantage of the today’s technological and communication environment to impact their target positively. He advised media practionres to pursue truth and posses skills in sharing it clearly and accurately.

The celebration was graced by the Deputy Minister of Communication Hon. George Andah representatives of the of the minister of education, Prof. Mohammed Salifu, The President of the Ghana Journalist Association, Alfrail Monny, director of the Volta River Authority, Dr Stella Agyenim Boateng, Prof Ekow Bondzi, Akua Sena Dansoa, Alumni and students of the institution.
Awards

As part of the celebrating, awards were presented to deserving students who contributed immersely in the field of study; Joshua Boye Doe over-all winner video documentary, Princilla Aikins overall best student video documentary.
