Foundation organises educational fair for orphans in Central Region

The Orphans Cake Foundation (OCF), an Accra-based orphan-centred non-governmental organisation (NGO), as part of its fifth anniversary, has organised a day’s educational fair for more than 300 orphans and their caregivers at Gomoa Fetteh in the Central Region.

The beneficiary orphanages were Village of Hope, Gomoa Fetteh; Tina Care, Agona Swedru; St Anns, Winneba; Mum’s Care and Becky’s Home, both in Senya Beraku.
As part of the event, children above 13 years were taken through mentorship and counselling where they were exposed to the various career options they could take up as their future professions.

It also afforded the OCF team members an opportunity to share their life experiences to encourage the orphans.

They were also advised not to look down upon themselves since with determination and commitment, they could grow up to become responsible adults.

Again, the foundation set up a shop containing clothing, foot wears, school bags, educational materials, as well as cosmetics where the children were each given a debit card worth GH¢50.00 while the adults were also given a debit card worth GH¢100 for them to shop for items of their choice.

The orphans were also provided with food and drinks to put smiles on their faces and to make them feel part of the society.

Rationale

The Founder of OCF, Mr Ato Kwamena, told the Daily Graphic that his outfit identified the challenge of the caregivers in providing the basic needs of the orphans; hence, their decision to support them in the upkeep of the children.

He said with the next academic year beginning in September, they decided to organise the fair to provide an opportunity for the orphans to be provided with some educational materials that would enhance their education.

He added that the move was to complement the efforts of the caregivers in their quest to provide the best of care for orphans who were largely disadvantaged in the society, as well as to reduce the burden on them.

Go the extra mile

Mr Kwamena admonished the orphans to go the extra mile by taking their education seriously since through that, they could become responsible adults capable of taking care of themselves.

Further, he urged them not to lose hope due to their situation but rather make the right career choices and pursue them vigorously in order to achieve their aspirations.

He noted that some orphans had been able to surmount their challenges, hence with determination and dedication, they could also make it.

The founder advised the caregivers to prioritise the education of the children and ensure that they were regular and punctual to school to enable them to climb to higher heights.
