The temporary structure which served as a link between the two communities for the past 10 years has been washed away many times by rains, endangering the lives of residents of the two communities, especially schoolchildren, whenever it rained.

Footbridge

The Ga South Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Jerry Akwei Thompson, who inaugurated the footbridge, said schools in the area, especially the Princess International School Complex, appealed to the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Weija/Gbawe to come to their aid, since the old footbridge posed danger to lives of schoolchildren in the area.

Obuobia foundation

Mr Thompson said the construction of the footbridge was as a result of the joint efforts of the Obuobia Foundation, an NGO belonging to the NDC parliamentary candidate, Ms Obuobia Darko-Opoku, and the assembly.

The MCE said artisans and civil engineers of the assembly were mobilised to undertake the construction of the footbridge through direct labour.

He explained that because of the direct labour from the assembly, the cost of the project was drastically reduced to GH¢30,000.

Mr Thompson appealed to residents to take proper care of the footbridge and ensure that schoolchildren used it for the purpose for which it was constructed.

He appealed to residents to keep an eye on children who would want to use it as a playing ground to avoid disasters.

Completion

He announced that with the completion of the Mallam footbridge, the assembly had two more footbridges to construct to make commuting within the municipality easy for residents.

Residents who use the bridge to send their children to school were full of praise for Ms Obuobia Darko-Opoku.

Ms Rose Ampah, a hairdresser and a resident, said many politicians had come and promised the residents of constructing a permanent footbridge to replace the rickety one but could not fulfil their promises.

Commendation

She commended Ms Darko-Opoku for fulfilling her promise and added that all residents needed to acknowledge her.

She appealed to her to pay a visit to the Borla road residents, since the last visit was in the night and not all the residents had the opportunity to thank her for a good job done.
