Five sustain injuries on Barnes Road

A Ford pick-up truck with registration number GN 3183-17 yesterday run into a Honda Civic salon car with registration GR 7458-18 on the Barnes Road in Accra, causing damage to both vehicles and injuring its occupants.

According to hawkers who ply their trade on the road and witnessed the accident, the truck jumped the red light at the Barnes Road traffic light and crashed into the Honda Civic which was also joining the road from the Ridge Roundabout.

The accident happened at the intersection in front of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital around midday.

The police were yet to respond to the accident at the time the Daily Graphic team visited the scene around 1:45 p.m.

Reckless driving

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said some drivers who used
the road that morning disregarded traffic regulations at the intersection because there were few vehicles on the roads due to the closure of some markets.

He said because there were few vehicles on the road, the drivers were not only speeding but were also driving recklessly through the red lights.

“You see because there are few vehicles on the road, drivers do not respect the traffic lights and they have been crossing the red light so that was how the pick-up caused the accident,” the source said.

Account

Another eyewitness, Mr Stephen Oppong, who gave an account of the incident, also said the Ford pick-up truck, which was on the Barnes Road, ignored the traffic light which at the time had indicated red and bumped into the Honda Civic which was also taking a turn onto the Barnes Road from the Castle Road.

“I got startled when I heard the sound of the crash because we were expecting the driver in the Ford to slow down,” he said.

Mr Oppong, who is a petty trader along the road, added that the Ford pick-up truck had five persons on board including a boy at the time of the accident.

He said the driver of the Pick-up truck, a man of about 35 years sustained more injuries than the driver of the Honda Civic, a lady who was driving alone.

“The driver in the Honda Civic looked very scared so she was just behind the steering wheel until she hit the electricity pole slightly,” he added.
