The campaign, dubbed: “Operation let the people know”, is intended to bring fire safety education to the doorstep of the people to make them fully aware of the need to help reduce fire outbreaks in the municipality.

The campaign was preceded by a route march through the principal streets of the town by fire officers and some schoolchildren duly trained as fire volunteers.

As part of the march, the public was educated on how to take precautionary measures to put a stop to unexpected bush  and domestic fires.

In a chat with the Daily Graphic, the Agona West Municipal Fire Commander, Mr Frederick Ohemeng, said the campaign was being replicated across the region to step up efforts aimed at controlling fire outbreaks.

According to him, the public needed to be fully aware of the causes of fire outbreaks for the people to put in safety measures to protect lives and properties.

He said statistics had shown that most people used Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) at home and their workplaces, which often caused domestic fires.

He advised the public to seek the services of certified electricians to wire their homes to prevent the use of substandard electrical cables.

He appealed to those in the forest areas to put a stop to indiscriminate burning of bushes, which is having a devastating consequence on the vegetation and the environment.

Mr Ohemeng said for the first quarter of this year, 35 fire outbreaks had been recorded within the municipality, compared to 19 for the same period in 2015.
