Fire razed down a chain of shops at the Aliu Mahama Junction, near Asoredanho at Dansoman, in Accra yesterday.

Many residents of the area believe the fire was caused by the burning of rubbish nearby, but the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) says it is yet to establish the cause of the fire.

A vulcanising shop lost about 700 tyres to the fire, while a carpentry shop, a salon, a chop bar and a key cutting shop were also torched.

There was no casualty.

When the Daily Graphic got to the scene, the fire had been put out but firemen were still around to forestall the possibility of the fire reigniting.

They used three fire engines for the operation.

According to the Greater Accra Regional Operations Officer of the GNFS, Divisional Officer Grade 1 Ofori Adjei, who led the team of firefighters to the scene, reinforcement was called from the Industrial Area and the GNFS Headquarters to help put out the fire.

He said the cause of the fire was yet to be established.

“Our attention has been drawn to some rubbish that was being burnt around, but we are yet to establish the true cause of the fire,” he told the Daily Graphic.

Eyewitness account

At the time of the visit by Daily Graphic, many people were gathered around the place, while some of those affected by the fire were counting their losses.

An eyewitness, Ms Martha Welbeck, told the Daily Graphic that around 1 p.m., she saw smoke around the shops but thought that it was from the burning of rubbish in front of the chop bar.

She said a little while later, she became alarmed when the smoke became thick. She, therefore, raised an alarm, which attracted people to the scene and immediately the Dansoman Office of the GNFS was called.

Shop owner

Mr Enoch Danso, the owner of the vulcanising shop, who was almost in tears, told the Daily Graphic that he received a call about the fire outbreak about 1 p.m.

He said about 700 tyres, estimated at GH¢42,000, were destroyed by the fire.
