President John Dramani Mahama has called on security operatives to exhibit the highest form of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

He said the best way for security officers to win the trust and confidence of the general public was to adhere to the laws that governed their operations.

“This can only be achieved if you respect the human rights of those you deal with, eschew corruption and ensure impartiality and confidentiality in the discharge of your duties,” he said in a speech read on his behalf at the graduation ceremony of officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at the GIS Academy in Assin Fosu in the Central Region last Friday.

Responsibility

The President further said the power entrusted to security operatives came with a high sense of responsibility, adding: “The granting of authority for officers and men to bear arms in the performance of their duties calls for high standards, professionalism and discipline in the exercise of this authority. You must, therefore, know that to whom much is given, much is required”.

Global peace

He added that the work of GIS could not be underestimated owing to recent developments in the area of migration across the world.

“The whole world, especially Europe, is confronted with a refugee crisis as a result of the armed conflicts in Syria and the incessant terrorist attacks in the West African sub-region. GIS, therefore, has a very crucial role to play in the socio-economic development of our country,” he stressed.

Project

President Mahama also announced that a project meant to enhance the operations of the Immigration Service and also ensure that its operations conform to best practices would be completed in May this year.

Known as the e-Immigration Project, the World Bank-funded project is aimed at the integration of border control operations, document and record management.

It will also improve information and communication infrastructure, interconnectivity with key stakeholders and the installation of a state-of-the-art data centre at the GIS Headquarters.

According to him, the project was the result of the invaluable contribution the GIS played in national development and the maintenance of peace and security in the country.
