Exercise to emboss digital addresses on public buildings ongoing

Two thousand four hundred state institutions and other popular buildings nationwide have been embossed with their digital addresses under the GhanaPost GPS national digital property addressing system.

In all, 4,000 of such structures are expected to be tagged under the contract between the Ghana Post and Vokacom, the designers of the application, under the first phase of the project.

The ongoing tagging exercise began in October 2017 and is expected to end in March 2018.

Phase two, which will involve the tagging of all other properties, is expected to be undertaken by Ghana Post on request and for a fee.

Tagging exercise continues

The Director in charge of the tagging exercise, Ms Edwina Andrews, told the Daily Graphic on the sidelines of the exercise in Accra yesterday that the tagging was part of the company’s mandate under the contract.

She said prominent facilities, including the headquarters of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Health Service, post offices, the Accra Sports Stadium, the Ghana News Agency and the Environmental Protection Agency in Accra, had already been tagged with their digital addresses.

She said the selected institutions were chosen for the first phase because it would easily facilitate government business, as well as make it easy to locate popular places such as tourist sites, churches and mosques without asking for directions.

She appealed to those who were yet to generate their digital addresses to do so as soon as possible to increase their visibility and enhance their operations, among other benefits.

“Its enormous benefits will begin to play out loud when the system is fully integrated with the work of essential services, including crime fighting, banking, firefighting, ambulance services, land registration and courier services,” she said.

System

Designed by VOKACOM and deployed in partnership with the Ghana Post Company Limited and the National Information Technology Agency (NITA), the system will make it easier to find locations across the country and also facilitate the work of emergency services.

A national address registry has been imbedded into the system to enable individuals to validate their homes and businesses for easy direction and identification.
