Empower women for effective development of economy

The President of the Ghana Association of Women Entrepreneurs (GAWE), Mrs Lucia Quachey, has called for the empowerment of women to enable them to participate in the effective management of the country’s economy.

According to her, by their nature women were good managers as demonstrated by their abilities to manage homes and families with meagre resources.

Mrs Quachey made the call during a health walk organised in Accra as part of activities to mark this year’s International Women Day.

She expressed the belief that if women were included in the management of the economy, they would equally perform as their male counterparts.

She said some of the challenges facing women were single parenthood and the stress associated with balancing office work with household chores.

Mrs Quachey, therefore, charged married couples to see themselves as persons whose roles were to cook, clean and take care of the children to ensure peaceful co-existence.

She said the situation where women alone did the household chores had changed dramatically as many women had taken on more roles including that of paying the bills.

In the same vein, she said, society had also seen an increase in women who were single parents and breadwinners for their families.

Don’t sell your vote

A lecturer from the Islamic College, Ghana, Mrs Kauthar Khamis, appealed to the Muslim community not to exchange their votes for monetary gains in the November 7 general election.

‘’You have to be neutral during the elections although you belong to a political party of your choice,” she said.

She advised the participants to be disciplined and have good relationship with their neighbours.
