Don’t burn bushes on farmlands

The Ashanti Regional Director of Agriculture, Mr Kwaku Minta Fordjour, has advised farmers to desist from burning bushes on farmlands in order not to destabilise the nutrients needed by plants to maximise yields.

He said although there were other contributory factors hindering agriculture, such as climate change and inadequate supply of fertiliser to farmers, adopting good farming practices were key to boosting production.

Mr Minta Fordjour was addressing a group of farmers drawn from across the country during the launch of Omya Calciprill and Magprill fertilisers in Kumasi at the weekend.

Sharing his view on the products, which were yet to hit the market in Ghana, he assured farmers that the company had gone through strict certifications, and urged farmers  to take advantage of the products.

Omya fertilisers

Calciprill and Magprill fertilisers are products of Omya International. They are  new products aimed at correcting soil acidity challenges hindering crop production in West Africa and beyond in order to enhance productivity.

According to the Director of Omya International, Mr Max Hemm, the products had gone through many field trials in many parts of the country and "the outcome is amazing".

“The products are organic. They neutralise the soil, as well as supply calcium and magnesium in a natural balance to the crop,” he said.

He noted that the product could be applied using a standard fertiliser spreader, adding that it eliminates the use of outside contractors and also makes spreading less dependent on prevailing weather conditions.

With its headquarters in Switzerland, Omya is patnered in Ghana by Carmanor Ghana Limited.

Sensitisation

The Western Regional Director of Agriculture, Mr Abdul Rahman Zibrim, for his part urged the manufacturers to extend their products to the remote areas nationwide where farming was predominant.

He again charged them to beef up sensitisation on the products in order for farmers to appreciate their numerous benefits.
