‘Develop competence of staff in private universities’

The Entrepreneurship Training Institute (ETI) has held its fourth Congregation ceremony in Accra with a call on private universities to invest more in the development of the competence of their staff to ensure quality education.

The acting Executive Director, Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), Mr Sampson Damptey Tetey, noted that “private institutions are expected to improve quality and relevant tertiary education in terms of quality students, structures, and teaching methods.”

He, therefore, appealed to private tertiary institutions to develop self-regulating and assessment procedures to ensure quality at all times and levels.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Mr Tetey underscored the role private institutions played in the development of human capital, especially at this time when two sets of graduates of the senior high school were to enter the universities and other tertiary institutions.

He assured the institute of government’s commitment to put up the necessary regulatory framework to boost education in the country.

Mr Tetey congratulated the institution on the achievements it had chalked up and, therefore, challenged the graduates to implement the knowledge they had acquired through years of rigorous academic work in tertiary education.

Speaking on the theme, “Entrepreneurship Education: The Future for Ghana’s Growth and Development,” the Rector of ETI, Prof. Francis Anane Joppa, noted that despite the massive efforts by successive governments to create employment, rapid population growth, with its attendant expanding labour force, had left a large number of people unemployed.

He said the institute was working assiduously to ensure that all programmes were oriented towards various industries and were market driven, adding that it would create employment for the teeming graduates.

The Chairman of the Council of the school, Mr Obed Daquah, in his welcome address, stated that the institute had over the past six years produced over 500 entrepreneurs to contribute to the nation’s socio-economic development.

Affiliated to the University of Cape Coast (UCC), the institute runs Bachelor of Science (Entrepreneurship) programmes, with options in Business Management, Marketing, Accounting, Human Resource Management, Financial Management, and Business Information Systems.
