Dansoman sewerage system being rehabilitated - Vanderpuiye

The Dansoman Estate Sewerage system is being rehabilitated under the Accra Sewerage Improvement Project (ASIP) financed with US$68 million from the African Development Bank. The ASIP would be extended to non-sewered areas close to the system.

The areas are James Town, Accra Central, Ministries Area, Labone, Civil Servants Estates, Achimota School and its environs, University of Ghana main campus and Junior Staff Quarters Area, Presbyterian Boys Secondary School, and University of Professional Studies and its environs, a Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Nii Lante Vanderpuiye, told Parliament when he answered questions last Wednesday.

Ms Ursula Owusu (Ablekuma West) had wanted to know from the minister steps the AMA had taken to repair and maintain the central sewerage system in the Dansoman Estates since it took over its management in 2007.

Her question was asked on her behalf by the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, Mr Justice Joe Appiah, since she was not in the House at the time.

Contract

Nii Lante said a contract was signed in August last year between the AMA and Messrs China Henan International Co-operation Group Company Ltd for the works on sewerage networks, which included cleaning and changing of sewer lines.

He said the works being done covered the Dansoman Estates, specifically the Zodiac Area (Banana Lane, through the Dansoman Post Office area, First Light to 2nd Anege Link), Nii Mampong Okai Area (Datus School Community) and Shaibu.

He indicated that currently in the Dansoman area, 2.8 kilometres of sewer lines had been cleaned and that the expected completion date of the project was November 30, this year.

Sensitisation

The deputy minister said the project had also undertaken sensitisation programmes for a wide range of stakeholders within the beneficiary communities.

He said the project was also procuring maintenance equipment for sustainable operation and maintenance of the equipment and the system.

On the Local Enterprises Skills Development Programme (LESDEP), Nii Lante said the programme was being reviewed to determine its impact and to make it more responsive to the current skill demands of the youth.

It will also be realigned with the Local Economic Development Policy and make MMDAs play a lead role in its implementation. The Member of Parliament for Sunyani East, Mr Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, had wanted to know the current state of the programme.

When the Member of Parliament for Kwabre East, Mr Kofi Frimpong, asked about the completion of the Jubilee Market Complex at Mamponteng, Mr Vanderpuiye said the project was stalled due to funding and that the assembly intended to continue with it as soon as funds were available.

Responding to another question by the Member of Parliament for Kpandai, Mr Matthew Nyindam, about the provision of an administration block for the district, he told the House that the Kpandai District would be considered for the infrastructure when funds were available.

On the reconstruction of the Bantama market (Adwaa Dwom), asked by the Member of Parliament for Bantama, Mr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, the deputy minister told the House that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly had requested for proposals for partnership under the public-private partnership policy for the redevelopment of the market.
