Customers storm Dwadifo Adanfo Microfinance Ltd at Kasoa

Customers of the Kasoa branch of the Dwadifo Adanfo Microfinance Limited have been thrown into a state of anxiety and worry following the closure of the branch last Monday.

The closure followed a panic rush by the customers to withdraw their money. The rush was occasioned by radio announcements by purported former aggrieved workers of the company that the branch was going bankrupt. Some of the customers are said to have threatened to attack the workers if they did not release all their savings to them.

It took the intervention of police personnel from the Kasoa District Police Station to prevent the customers from taking the workers hostage.

The Kasoa District Police Commander, Superintendent Samuel  Punobyin, told the Daily Graphic that the customers said they would not allow the staff to go out of the office till they received their money.

He said the police then moved the officials out of the company and took them to the police station for security reasons.

Customers besiege office

The customers have since been camping at the office waiting for news of their money. When the Daily Graphic team went to the office yesterday, scores of the customers were seen still seated outside the locked offices.

The customers, including Mrs Faustina Antwi, a trader, and Mr Richard Oppong, a commercial driver, told the Daily Graphic that they were afraid they would lose their savings.

Mrs Antwi has GH¢2,500 in her account while Mr Oppong has GH¢3,222 savings per the records in their saving booklets.

Mrs Antwi, who has been a customer of the company for five years, claimed that she wanted to withdraw the money to pay her daughter’s senior high school admission fees. She said she did not have any alternative means of raising any money to pay the fees.

Anxiety

The anxiety of the customers was heightened because the managers and workers had switched off their phones. The customers told the Daily Graphic that all attempts to get in touch with their contact persons or managers at the Kasoa branch had been unsuccessful.

Another challenge is that although all the other branches of the company are in operation, the customers cannot withdraw their money from any of them.

Mr Richard Oppong, who has been saving with the company for four years, wanted to withdraw the money to repair his car.

He said he went to the Agona Swedru branch last Monday but they refused to pay him because the staff claimed they could not get in touch with their counterparts in Kasoa to get the clearance. The other branches are at Kaneshie, Madina, Kantamanto, Accra New Town, Techiman, Adum and Hohoe.

No response

All attempts by the Daily Graphic  to get in touch with the managers of the Dwadifo Adanfo Microfinance Limited on phone proved futile as they would not pick their calls.
