COVID-19: Kwesi Yankah lauds UEW for safety measures to protect final year students
The Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah, has commended management of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) for putting in place the required safety protocols to receive final year students.
According to him, he was extremely satisfied with the measures put in place by the university authority towards ensuring the safety of the final year students who were back on campus to complete the 2019/2020 academic year.

Prof Yankah gave the commendation when he paid a courtesy call on the university management to assess its preparedness towards receiving the students to successfully exit their respective academic programmes in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic last Monday.
Safety measures
The university since the arrival of the students has supplied the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including face masks provided by the Ministry of Education to ensure their safety.
Also, there will be regular decontamination of lecture rooms, surfaces, doors, walkways and staircases at least three times a week as well as enhanced cleaning of spaces, surfaces and handles.
Additionally, hands sanitizers had been provided on all floors of lecture blocks and halls of residence as well as repair and installation of adequate and appropriate hand washing basins in all washrooms
Furthermore, Veronica buckets have been fitted at vantage points with appropriate taps as back-up plan to hand washing basins.

He noted that “I am delighted that since my visit, I have chanced upon many of the students who are strictly adhering to the precautionary measures as directed by the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo aimed at controlling the spread of the virus.
He called on the management to intensify education on the pandemic and strictly monitor the students to ensure that they did not engage in activities that had the tendency to spread the deadly virus.
For his part, the Vice Chancellor of the UEW, Rev Fr Prof Anthony Afful-Broni disclosed that a suitable place had been reserved at the university’s hospital to treat suspected COVID-19 related cases.
He mentioned that management was working closely with both public and private health facilities in the Effutu municipality in the fight against the pandemic in the area, stressing “we have made logistics available to health institutions to tackle the pandemic as well as taken part in contact tracing to stem the spread of the virus”.
Also present at the meeting were the Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Andy Ofori-Birikorang and the Registrar, Mr Paul Osei-Barima.
