Court remands 19 year coconut seller for robbery

A 19-year-old school dropout and coconut seller has been hauled before the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly snatching a banker’s handbag at Gbawe Bulemi in the Greater Accra Region.

Presenting the facts of the case, Chief Inspector K. Adu, told the court, presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin- Doku that on January 11, 2018, Yormewu Delali Philomena, the complainant had closed from work and was going home and decided to use a short route to her house.

According to him, when the complainant was going home, she realised that the accused, Mubarak Adamu, was following her.

Chief Inspector K. Adu said on realizing the fast pacing of the accused steps, the complainant stopped in order to pave way for the accused to pass.

He explained that when the accused got to the spot where the complainant had stopped, he pulled a knife and demanded the complainant’s handbag.

On sensing danger, he told the court, the complainant handed over her bag and started calling for help while chasing the accused.

Chief Inspector K. Adu told the court that the complainant’s shout for help received a prompt response, hence leading to the eventual arrest of the accused.

He said the complainant’s bag contained a purse, cash of GH¢ 21.00, Beige Bank cheque book, room keys and other personal items, adding that the incident occurred on the said date at about 9:00pm.

The accused, Mubarak Adamu, in responding to a question from the judge admitted having committed the crime but said he didn’t take the bag from the complainant forcibly.

The judge, Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin- Doku, however remanded the accused into police custody to reappear on January 28, 2018.
